Donnas Movie Reviews

The best movie named after a candy since Skittles: The Movie
Jawbreaker
Donnas on soundtrack: "Rock 'n' Roll Machine"
Donnas in movie: Prom band, performs "Rock 'n' Roll Machine" and "Checkin' It Out"
About the movie: A group of popular girls, including Courtney Shane (Rose McGowan), Marcie Fox (Julie Benz), and Julie Freeman (Rebecca Gayheart) celebrate their friend Liz Purr's birthday by tying her up and putting her in the trunk with a jawbreaker in her mouth. She chokes on the jawbreaker so they have to cover up her death. Unfortunately they are spotted by an unpopular girl, Fern Mayo (Judy Greer). In exchange for her silence, Courtney offers to turn her into the popular Vylette. However Julie is feeling bad about her friend's death, and decides to rebel against the other girls.
DVD Extras: Trailers for it and a few other movies. Director commentary which mentions the Donnas a few times. Here's a few samples:
  • Carol Kane (who plays the principal) went to the Donnas trailer and asked them to keep it down.
  • While filming the prom scenes, the Donnas played the same two songs over and over.
  • He also talked a little about who the Donnas were, but nothing we didn't already know.

    Featuring Sabrina, the teenage witch!
    Drive Me Crazy
Donnas on soundtrack: "Keep on Loving You" (cover of REO Speedwagon)
Donnas in movie: Electrocutes, perform "Outta My Mind," "Get Rid of That Girl" and "Keep on Loving You." Also includes a "homemade" music video of "Get Rid of That Girl"
About the movie: Nicole (Melissa Joan Hart) and Chase (Adrian Grenier) are neighbors who hang with different crowds. Nicole is rejected by the star quarterback (or whatever the basketball equivalent of that is) and decides to drag Chase into her web of lies and deceit. She gets him new clothes and makes him hang with her popular friends. Eventually they fall in love, since this is a high school movie. Whoops, hope I didn't ruin the ending for you.
DVD Extras: There are 2 music videos (Britney Spears, Jars of Clay) but no Donnas. How hard would it have been to cut together at least a full version video of "Get Rid of That Girl?" I'm sure they shot enough footage. Grrrr.

Not a Donnas movie, but an incredible simulation
    Detroit Rock City
Donnas on soundtrack: "Strutter" (cover of Kiss)
Donnas in movie: No. None of their songs are even played. The original version of "Strutter" is played though.
About the movie: It's 1978 and four friends are all set to go to the Kiss concert in Detroit. Then one of their moms burns their tickets. Now they have to get to Detroit and try to find new tickets. Hilarity ensues.
DVD Extras: Lots! The best of course is the Donnas "Strutter" video.
